Hakan Carlqvist: 1954-2017

Former world champion Hakan Carlqvist has died age just 63. The Swedish hard man won a 250 world title on Husqvarna in 1979 and the 500 crown on a Yamaha in 1983, and won 20 GPs. But perhaps his finest moment was in his last GP victory at Namur in Belgium in 1988. Riding a privateer Kawasaki against the mighty factory Hondas, he was leading the second race by 50 seconds and stopped at the famous road section next to a bar and had a beer! That event is where this photo of him was taken, by MotoHead’s own Adam Duckworth.

Carla was a fearsome rider who disappeared from racing following his retirement. He had been ill for a short time.

Watch him stop for a beer in probably the most famous incident in motocross history.
