Brit Conrad Mewse recooded his best ever GP finish with a third place, but it was fast-improving Dane Thomas Kjer Olsen who made his first trip to the MX2 GP podium at the Latvian GP, and it was to stand on the top step as overall winner. The factory Husky ace took control of the first moto and snatched his first GP moto win. Then second time out he caught up to local hero and holeshot man Pauls Jonass, and followed him over the line to record the overall victory.

Jonass was disappointed at not wining his home GP, but only missed out on victory by two points. In the opener he lost second place to title rival Jeremy Seewer on the final lap. But a holeshot and a clear win, despite pressure from Thomas Covington,  in race two gave him second overall.

He also extended his lead over Seewer who went out in dramatic style in moto two. Seewer fell in the first turn but quickly remounted, then had a huge crash later on the first lap. He made a charge through the pack until the whole back end of his factory Suzuki collapsed and he pulled out. He now trails KTM man Jonass by 42 points, with Olsen’s win boosting him up to third in the series, 10 points behind Seewer.

Calvin Vlaanderen took third overall from fast-starting Jorge Prado, as they both tied on 34 points but South African Vlaanderen’s second moto fourth was one place in front of the Spaniard so he got the nod.

But one of the rides of the day was from Brit Conrad Mewse who took a fighting third place in the second moto. Combined with ninth in the opener, it was good for a career-best fifth overall.

Ben Watson took 19th overall, with 24th then 13th place finishes.
