Suzuki’s duo of Jeremy Seewer and Hunter Lawrence took a one-two sweep of the MX2 class in the German GP despite off-track excursions and fighting through traffic.
Swiss ace Seewer, who used to ride in the German championship and knows the Teutschental track well, fought his way to the front of the opening moto to take the win.
Second time out he didn’t have such a great start, and ended up running off the track on the opening lap. He stayed on and rejoined the race, eventually taking fourth place which was good enough for the overall win.
Seewer, who took his second GP win of the year, said: “It’s so cool. I had a lot of work to do to pass riders in the opener. I’m getting closer to the points lead and I’ll try to do the same in the next GP.”
Aussie Lawrence was unaware he’d finished second overall after crossing the line third in the second race, until four-times world champ Harry Everts ran onto the track to tell him the news. It was his first podium finish in the world championship.
Lawrence, who took fourth and third place finishes, finished level on points with series leader Pauls Jonass. But his better result in the final race gave the Suzuki man the nod.
Lawrence said: “It’s awesome. It’s really cool to get my first podium here. I can’t explain how happy I am.”
Latvian Jonass keeps the red plate after finishing third overall on a day when he just didn’t have the pace to match the top men. He took the holeshot and led race two but just had no match for his rivals.
Jonass said: “In the first race I was happy with my riding as it’s not really my track. In moto two I got a holeshot but I wasn’t feeling it. I was struggling with confidence so I’m happy to be on the podium.”
Fourth overall was American Thomas Covington, who ran away with the last race. In the opener he fell on the first lap and put on a charge through the pack to finish 14th, one spot in front of Briton Ben Watson.
The opening race saw Seewer win from Jonass and Thomas Kjer Olsen, with Lawrence fourth and Brian Hsu fifth.
The second moto, won by Covington, saw first moot non-finisher Benoit Paturel in second place from Lawrence, Seewer and Jonass. Watson didn’t finish.
