Tony Cairoli romped to victory in the MXGP qualifier at the German GP as his rival Teim Gajser crashed hard while leading. The Honda man, who went out of the last race in Latvia in a big crash, looked to have lost control as he scrubbed a huge jump. He went down hard, and for a while looked hurt. But he got back up and completed a slow lap before retiring. It’s not known whether he’ll race tomorrow.
The race saw a KTM one-two as Cairoli inherited the lead from Gasjer, with his fellow team rider Jeffrey Herlings making his way through to second after a 10th place start when he almost fell in the first turn.
With Gautier Paulin, Jeremy Van Horebeek and Romain Febvre fighting over second place, Herlings caught them up and picked off one at a time on the rutty track. Paulin held on to third from Van Horebeek and Febvre.
It was a double no-score for HRC Honda as Evgeny Bobryshev broke his collarbone in the qualifying session and didn’t start the race.
In the MX2 race, Benoit Paturel took hios first win as lots of the leading men crashed – including Thomad Covington, Thomas-Kjer Olsen, Jeremy Seewer and Julien Lieber.
Pauls Jonass, who led initially but didn’t seem to have the pace of the top men, managed to stay on board and got second from Seewer who remounted and pulled back to third.
