Honda’s Conrad Mewse took two start-to-finish race wins at the opening NPC Pro round at Oxford Moto Park on Sunday, while late entrant Tommy Searle gave Triumph its first UK national win in the MX2 class, which was combined with MX1.
Mewse set a blistering pace in qualifying, more than three seconds faster than SC Husky man Tristan Purdon with Mewse’s team-mate Jamie Carpenter third quickest. And that was the result in both motos, too, so how they finished on the podium.
In the first heat Mewse led with Carpenter on his heels while Purdon had to make his way forward past Joel Rizzi, Tommy Searle, Carlton Husband and Glenn McCormick. As Mewse pulled away to win by almost a minute, Carpenter looked good in second until he ran wide and crashed, remounting in fifth place. Purdon made his way to second with Searle not too far behind. As Rizzi drifted down the field, Carpenter chased Searle home. So Searle was first MX2, with Carpenter third in MX1 from fellow Honda 450 rider Brad Todd.
In the second ace Mewse once again led and began to pull away again,. winning by almost 30 seconds from Purdon who this time made a decent start. Carpenter came through to third from Todd with Searle fifth, again top MX2 man. Dan Thornhill was next on his 450 from MX2 ace Charlie Heyman. Ben Mustoe was third MX2, so the podium was Searle, Heyman and Mustoe.
